Why is tank cleaning important?
Because of Struvite
Struvite forms when organic waste breaks down and releases ammonium which combines with minerals like magnesium and phosphate. Over time, these deposits harden into rock-like crystalline buildup that can cause foul odors, damage tanks, interfere with tank sensors, and block drain openings.
Struvite compositions change depending on the mineral content of any given water source. Frequent travel and introducing different waters to your system can make the problem worse. Additionally, many of the tank maintenance chemicals commonly sold to RV adventurers contribute to the phosphate portion of struvite build up.
The question isn’t, “Do I have struvite?” — it’s, “How much struvite do I have?”
Like all systems on your RV, your black and gray tanks require maintenance to ensure reliable function and long-lasting life. It’s always cheaper (and less disgusting) to periodically clean your tanks than it is to replace them.
We recommend professional cleaning of black and gray tanks at least once per year for full-time RV adventurers and every two years for part-time RV owners.

My name is Aaron. After retiring from the Marine Corps, I sold everything to live the nomadic RV lifestyle aboard The Gypsy Queen. It didn’t take long before I realized the nationwide shortage of trustworthy, high-quality mobile RV services.
I decided to be a part of the solution and trained at the National RV Training Academy as an Advanced RV Technician. I now have the technical expertise to provide the kind of service I believe every camper deserves access to.
